09: Block Changes｜Image of Sentient Beings 2020
All things in the world are changeable, which is the very notion that I tried to convey in this project. The so-called “image of sentient beings” mentioned in the Diamond Sutra, to my mind, is the notion of “category” asserted by Immanuel Kant in his The Critique of Pure Reason.
As stated above, “categories” in real life are summarized ideas based on human observations, such as a family of animals or plants or the typology of photography. All these categories are products of summarized ideas based on the observation of similar things. Detailed reasoning is omitted here for concise reasons. However, what I intended to convey is that things under every category or species are changeable, the images of all sentient beings are changeable, and the progress of the world is impossible without changes. Sun Wukong’s 72 transformations, as depicted in the Journey to the West, are drawn upon in this project to manifest my understanding of the changes in the “image of all sentient beings”.
