Liu RuizhiThe Four Notions
Inspired by the Four Notions described in the Diamond Sutra—self, people, sentient beings, and lifespan—this body of work explores how identity is constructed, perceived, and transformed through images, materials, and time. Rather than illustrating Buddhist concepts directly, each work approaches one notion through a different photographic process, examining the instability of the self and the shifting relationship between individuals, others, and the world.
Notions of a Lifespan

Material: paper, pencil, eraser, photographic prints
A number is written and erased each day as a record of passing time. The action leaves behind traces, fragments, and marks that gradually accumulate. Rather than measuring life through chronology alone, the work focuses on what remains after repetition and disappearance. Lifespan is approached not as a fixed duration, but as an ongoing process of change, loss, and persistence.
