This artist book is a continuation of the artist’s graduation project, produced for Photo London Fair and Peckham 24 Photo. The publication brings together two collected materials: cigarette butts and discarded cigarette boxes.
Each page contains a photograph of a single cigarette butt collected in London. Through close observation, the images record traces of use, pressure, damage, residue, and bodily contact. The covers are made from the coloured and metallic inner papers taken from found cigarette packs, giving each copy a different surface, texture, and visual character.
The book is sewn and glued, allowing the pages to open and be read while retaining the compact, object-like form of a cigarette pack. Each finished book is placed back into a found cigarette box. The outer box varies between copies, so the work is not tied to one specific cigarette brand. At the end of the book is a text taken from the concluding section of the artist’s dissertation, examining cigarettes in relation to capitalism, colonial history, and consumer culture.
